Another year, another variant of Covid. It’s totally understandable if you’re packing your suitcases and setting off for sunnier climes. However, before you head off on that jet plane, be sure to make your home secure so it is ready and able to take on the cold weather in your absence.
- Turning your water supply off at the stopcock can give you complete peace of mind if a cold snap hits the UK hard. Escape of water damage is one of the most common types of insurance claims with UK insurers paying out £1.8 million1 for it every day.
- Draining your hot water and heating system will ensure there is no chance of burst pipes.
- If you decide to leave the heating on whilst you are away then make sure that your thermostat is set at a minimum temperature of 15’C to keep things ticking over.
- If storms do come in you’ll want to make sure that the outside of your property is prepared. Check that your roof tiles are in place, your gutters and downpipes are clear from autumn leaves and debris and that ground level drains are running freely.
- Ask a neighbour to check on your property regularly. Asking them to put your bins out, pick up your post, open and close curtains and pop on lights can all help create the impression that you are still at home.
