We often spend more time at home in the winter, so making sure your home is fortified against the cold weather can add an extra layer of protection against possible accidental damage and storm damage. Discover how to get your home protected in winter with our step-by-step checklist.
Why do you need to service your boiler?
Each year there are approximately 60 deaths linked to carbon monoxide poisoning because of faulty boilers and heating systems.1 Ideally, a boiler needs to be checked by a professional heating engineer once a year.2 The Gas Safe Register can be a good resource for finding a qualified Gas Safe engineer in your local area.
Why do you need carbon monoxide alarms?
During winter the risk of carbon monoxide leaks can be higher, as the use of ovens, heating systems, boilers and fires increases. Installing the appropriate carbon monoxide alarms in your home as a warning system for leaks and dangerous levels of carbon monoxide is vital. Neglecting to do so can result in carbon monoxide poisoning that could lead to loss of consciousness or in some cases, fatalities.
A carbon monoxide alarm should be installed in every room with fuel burning appliances unless the appliance is a gas cooker. The carbon monoxide alarm should be placed approximately one to three metres from the appliance and be compliant with British Standards BS 50291 according to GOV.UK.3
It is a legal requirement for landlords to install carbon monoxide alarms in their rental properties, and failure to do so could result in a fine of up to £5,000.4
How could a damaged roof affect your insurance?
Regular inspections of your roof (twice a year – before winter and after), can stand you in good stead with your insurer.5 If your roof leaks after heavy rainfall because of poor roof maintenance, your insurer might not cover the cost of repairs.
Why do you need to tidy your garden in winter?
Turn your attention to your garden in winter when the leaves have mostly dropped. If your lawn is long, mow it before frost and possibly snow comes along as this can help towards having a healthy lawn in Spring.
Prune low hanging branches around your property, including those near outside structures such as extensions and garages (anything with a roof). Pruning can help lower the risk of a falling branch damaging your property which could lead to needing to make a claim for storm damage.
Clean and pack away garden furniture. You can put it in a shed, outhouse, or garage; or tie it down securely and cover it up (tarpaulin is a good protector). Securing garden furniture can prevent accidental damage to your property. Bistro sets, tables, chairs, umbrellas, flowerpots, and planters can damage outside structures if they become unstable in high winds and heavy storms.
Secure your garage, shed or outbuildings
Check the locks and fastenings on your outdoor buildings, including sheds. Even if you have only stored garden furniture in the shed or outbuilding, burglars could view the contents as potential money makers. If you keep tools and sports equipment in outhouses or the garage, make sure the locking systems are secure, as a faulty lock, latch or catch could make it easier for burglars to break in.
